Gjógv harbour

Gjógv actually means cleft but it’s also the name of this village. It’s the same word as geo, used for similar clefts around Orkney, and possibly elsewhere.

Most – probably all – of the gjógvs in the Faroes are dikes – volcanic intrusions up cracks in the older rocks – that were softer than the older rocks, and have eroded away.
