Iceberg

From the deck of the Polar Moon.

The relatively big iceberg in the middle of the picture shows the history of big lumps breaking off the top, causing abrupt changes in its level and angle in the water – the notches are cut by ripple action at the sea surface.

Even though that iceberg is many times larger than the Polar Moon – that’s just the part above water, never mind the 90% of it that’s below the surface – the Polar Moon crew is brave enough to bring the boat (slowly) right up to icebergs like that and nudge them gently out of the way.

Just don’t do it (they say) when you can see that a big piece is liable to break off the top imminently.
