Cloud Base

On the slopes of Kristinartindur, Skaftafell, Iceland, just below cloud base.

When you’re almost in line with the cloud base, you can see what a straight line it often is. On the slopes of the hill immediately above me, I could see how ragged it was close up, though (sorry, no pictures). Since it was descending, and there were a lot of huge precipices around, I thought it was time to head back down to lower ground while I could still see where I was going

In the distance, you can see conical piles of ice where ice is falling over a cliff. At intervals you could hear distant crashing sounds as house-size lumps of ice fell onto the piles.

You see that strange pattern of pale lines on the hillside right of centre? Lots of photos on that particular roll of film have those, some so bad they completely ruin the picture. The emulsion on the slide was slightly crinkled – despite what the weather looks like in that picture, the camera on the parcel shelf in the car got too hot during that holiday! That’s what overheating does to film...
