Home from home for me, from 1976 to 1984. Where I stayed whenever I visited London. One of my best friends at the time was Nicholas Saunders, who had bought this old warehouse, made an eccentric flat for himself in the top floor, and turned the rest of it into Neal’s Yard Wholefoods. There’s a bit of sad history about the Wholefoods shop that I won’t go into here. You can see what the place has become.
The plaque on the wall is in memory of Nicholas.
I first met Nicholas in 1974 when he was doing research for his book, Alternative England and Wales. He’d sought me out because I was the secretary of the Communes Network at the time.
