Turntable Ferry

The Glenelg-Kylerhea turntable ferry about to depart from Kylerhea. It can carry six small cars, or four motor caravans. It’s important for them to balance the load both while at sea and while loading and unloading. The turntable means that people don’t have to reverse off – which would make keeping the balance particularly difficult, especially if anyone had a trailer or a caravan.

The last turntable ferry operating in the UK – and really pretty much only a tourist attraction now, since they built a bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh, on the main road.

The other ferry connecting Skye to the mainland isn’t just a tourist attraction: it’s a longer crossing from Mallaig to Armadale, on a quite different route from the road with the bridge.

Here’s my video of the turntable operating, and the ferry under way.
