Nuclear Submarine

Seen from the top of Lyle Hill, Greenock on the 7th March 2019 at 12:08. What the people on the top of it were doing there I’ve no idea.

Distance: about three miles / five kilometres. The sub was just off Baron’s Point (on the Rosneath Peninsula) – not very far from its base at Faslane in Gare Loch. From there it headed, still surfaced, up Loch Long. I think the people on top of it had gone by then, but I wasn’t watching the whole time and I don’t know whether they were picked up by the ship that was alongside in this photo, or whether they were crew who went into the sub.

Not what you want to see from your daily walk, not even once.

Update 2024: we’ve seen these monstrosities quite a few times now, usually from Coves Nature Reserve, rather than from Lyle Hill.
