These are the homes of the poor, built out of whatever the occupants can afford, or scavenge out of other people’s rubbish. There are still areas of jhaggis like this here and there all over India.
There are many happy people in the jhaggis, just as there are many depressed – even suicidal – people living in palaces. Nonetheless, there is no excuse for a system in which some people, through no virtue of their own, live in palaces, while others, through no fault of their own, live in places like this. Or worse...
