The river Narmada cuts a gorge through a marble ridge just west of Jabalpur, in Madhya Pradesh. It’s quite a tourist attraction. Local chaps operate rowing boats up and down the river through the gorge for tourists, there are loads of little stalls selling souvenirs on the approach road, and a guest house that dates back to the time of the British Raj and still has that air, albeit somewhat shabby and faded by now. Well, that’s how it all was in 1984; I’ve not been there since then.
