Himalayan Foothills

Seen from the summit of Surkanda Devi, 3050 m (10,000 ft), Uttaranchal, India. April 1990.

There’s a Hindu temple at the top of Surkanda Devi now, but it was built after our visit. I’m sure the path is very much improved, too.

On a clear day, some of the really high himalayan peaks ought to be visible from here. But this wasn’t a clear day...later on, the cloud descended around us and it began to snow. Fortunately the path down was very easy to follow! We did manage to see the big mountains a couple of days later, from Mussoorie.
